On 10 September, more than 50 representatives from Navarra’s agri-food sector gathered at the headquarters of NAGRIFOOD – Navarra Agri-Food Cluster to explore pathways for accelerating the region’s transition to circularity.
The workshop focused on the valorisation of agri-food by-products—one of Navarra’s key circular economy challenges—and on identifying collaborative initiatives that could deliver innovative, interregional solutions under the European Circular Innovation Valley (ECIV) project.
Building on an earlier session held in May, where stakeholders agreed that circularity in agri-food was a regional priority, the event provided both continuity and momentum. Participants were introduced to the terms and conditions of the newly launched ECIV Open Call, which offers funding opportunities for cross-regional projects in value creation from by-products.
The session combined knowledge-sharing with hands-on group work. Small teams, guided by moderators, first revisited the main conclusions of the previous workshop, then worked to prioritise common challenges in by-product valorisation. These included issues linked to regulation, market demand, financing, knowledge gaps, technology readiness, and collaboration potential. Each group was asked to consider: What are the most pressing barriers preventing greater circularity in Navarra’s agri-food sector?
In a second round, participants brainstormed project ideas and leverage points for joint action. Spokespersons from each table presented their conclusions to the full audience, fostering a shared sense of direction and ownership.
A highlight of the day was the introduction of the ECIV Matchmaking Tool by the Government of Navarra – Sodena team. The platform enables stakeholders across Europe to connect, develop projects, and exchange best practices, supported by activities such as webinars and B2B meetings.
The workshop also showcased the strengths of other ECIV partner regions already advancing circularity, positioning them as potential collaborators for Navarra’s future initiatives.
The event concluded with agreement on the next steps for strengthening Navarra’s role in Europe’s transition towards a circular agri-food system.
