The BALTIPLAST project (Baltic Approaches to Handling Plastic Pollution under a Circular Economy Context) is co-funded by the EU under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region initiative. It brings technological solutions to help public authorities reduce plastic waste and trigger investments in sustainable sorting and recycling.
Its solutions target all levels of reducing plastic use in the Baltic Sea Region, including strategic and management practices, communication and behaviour change, and technical and technological improvements for better plastic waste management. It is developing the BALTIPLAST Plastic Waste Management Platform which acts as a solution hub for plastic waste management, reduction and prevention in the region. The project spans Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The project's final event will take place over two days, and participants will have a chance to connect with local and regional leaders, practitioners, researchers and NGOs.
The programme includes:
- Learn about Turku’s climate goals, the circular economy roadmap and the latest research on plastic pollution in the Baltic Sea region.
- Discover findings from the BALTIPLAST project and related initiatives, with a focus on strategies and tools ready for municipal uptake and microplastic research presented by STEAM Turku students.
- Engage with experts from cities across the region in discussions on results, lessons learned and practical applications.
- Participate in community engagement snapshots, a Finnish language moment and table talks designed to foster new partnerships and knowledge exchange.
- Explore solutions and best practices from other projects.
- Capitalise on networking opportunities.
- There will also be site visits, such as a guided tour to the Topinoja Waste Management Centre.
The conference is primarily aimed at local public authorities and service providers, but also welcomes NGOs and businesses interested in practical solutions and capacity building for plastic waste reduction.
This event will take place in person and in English. There is no charge for participating. Registration (deadline: 17 November) and programme.
