The challenges of water availability and quality are becoming increasingly urgent in Europe. Even in Wallonia, where water seems plentiful, water suppliers are already struggling in some areas to provide the quantities of water required for economic activity, particularly during peak consumption periods. Yet, water resources are essential for industrial competitiveness and our self-sufficiency. Without water, how can we guarantee the production of goods, the operation of a growing number of data centers, energy production, or simply food sovereignty?
Furthermore, Wallonia has announced its intention to mobilize 1500 hectares of industrial brownfield sites for the economic redevelopment of the Region, which leads to addressing a number of challenges related to flood-prone land and water infiltration in historically polluted land.
In this context, how can economic activities be reconciled with sustainable water resource management?
What if the solution lay in innovation and the deployment of Blue Business Parks, resilient and exemplary economic activity parks in terms of water management? Can such places, where water conservation, the use of alternative water resources and integrated rainwater management would be the norm, become a reality in Wallonia?
